The Jolly Jumper – is it worth getting??

Even though bubbas look like they are having a ball in these jumpers and they do look very cute, we do recommend to avoid them as much as possible

The Jolly Jumper is a toy that we often speak about in clinic, as lots of our patients may have been gifted one, or they are asking our opinion on whether they are recommended.

Even though bubbas look like they are having a ball in these jumpers and they do look very cute, we do recommend to avoid them as much as possible. The reason for this, is because when in the Jolly Jumper, bubbas are in a position that isn’t optimal for their hip development.

Another reason we recommend avoiding Jolly Jumpers, is because when bubs are in these they are bouncing up and down on their tippy toes, which can cause confusion when they learn how to walk. When in the Jolly Jumper, baby’s are putting weight through their little toes, which may lead to toe-walking when they begin to learn how to walk and place pressure through their feet.

When babies start to put weight through their feet, we love to encourage this to be as organic as possible. Things we look for are:

  • Waiting until when they are ready to lift themselves to a standing position
  • Avoiding socks and shoes as much as possible
  • Just their little feet learning to become accustomed to the ground in the most natural way as possible to encourage their joints and muscles to mature and develop at the right times

In saying this, if you have been gifted a Jolly Jumper and would love to put your bubs in for a minute to try it or show a family member then this is okay, just try for as minimal time as possible. We do understand that as parents you do need a few minutes here and there for yourself and will need to have bubs supported during these times. It may be the first opportunity you’ve had all day to have an uninterrupted toilet visit!! In these cases baby bouncers are encouraged instead.
